Expertise

PIE, Inc. focuses on strategy, operations, and new business development for physician clinics and outpatient centers.  We are very skilled at assisting medical organizations with finding answers to some of the toughest strategic and operational challenges that they are facing.  Case studies demonstrating PIE, Inc.'s qualifications include:

  • Clinic Strategic Plan.  A 28 physician clinic is looking to clarify its long-term strategic directions (Should it open a new satellite clinic?  Should it continue to accept patients from a certain HMO?  How should income be divided?  Should it recruit new specialists?).  PIE, Inc. is retained.  The consultation process includes assessments of the external competitive environment as well as the internal climate and views of stakeholders; a stakeholder retreat is held to review the results of these assessments and then to compare and contrast alternative strategic visions; PIE, Inc. creates a detailed strategic plan based on the feedback from this retreat; a final stakeholder meeting is held to put the finishing touches on the new strategic plan.

  • Clinic Mergers and Acquisitions.  A hospital is acquiring a medical practice and two medical groups are considering merging.  PIE, Inc. is engaged to facilitate the merger/acquisition.  PIE, Inc. facilitates agreement on terms and goals, coordinates the due diligence process, and develops detailed plans for the merging operations.  PIE, Inc. serves as a central coordinator for lawyers, accountants, insurance brokers, information system managers and others, assuring that the goals of the principals are achieved.

  • New Business Plan.  Several clinics and hospitals wish to assess the feasibility of initiating a new collaborative business venture.  PIE, Inc. is retained to manage the feasibility and business planning process.  PIE, Inc. moderates meetings of the principals, performs market research, coordinates the work of other experts (e.g., lawyers, accountants, building contractors, third party administrators, informatics companies), and facilitates the emergence of a common vision and business plan.  A business plan is created and PIE, Inc. continues to play a supportive role once the business is operational, growing, and successful.

  • Operations Improvement.  A large clinic is dissatisfied the performance of its business office.  Problems are manifest in billing, collections, health plan contracting and even patient dissatisfaction.  PIE, Inc. is retained to solve the problem.  PIE, Inc. assesses the internal operation using objective benchmarks and qualitative reviews, then compares and contrasts alternatives to improve operations for consideration by clinic management.  With approval of clinic management, PIE, Inc. oversees step-by-step implementation of the solution.
